Gillette Red Dot Fatboy Adjustable, 1958 (D1) - Sealed Bid Auction

Regular price $656.00 Sale

This auction has closed. For those who like to keep track of what things are going for, the winning bid was $656. Thanks to all who bid and to all who shared the auction.

Shave HQ is proud to offer something very special: your chance to own a genuine Red Dot Fatboy. As this one does, nearly all Red Dots bear the D1 date code, indicating manufacture in the first quarter of 1958. Historical Gillette documents indicate that the Red Dot was only test marketed and never entered full scale production. In other words, they're rare as hens' teeth.

At first glance the Red Dot looks no different than a standard Fatboy; at second glance you may notice that it is slightly longer, and that it has a small red circle to indicate the position of the adjuster, rather than the rectangular cut out exposing a bit of red-painted spring of a standard Fatboy. Closer examination, however, reveals that a Red Dot is essentially a Toggle in Fatboy's clothing. Aside from the Toggle's eponymous door-opening mechanism, the Red Dot's internals and functionality closely match the Toggle's. If you purchase this razor, you may notice that the adjustment knob offers a bit more resistance than a standard Fatboy's. This is not a defect but rather is due to a different mechanism and a larger spring.

Aside from a bit of plate loss on the handle and a bit of minor pitting here and there (both visible in the photos above), this Red Dot looks really nice. And to insure it is functioning perfectly, it was recently serviced by Captain Murphy, a very well-regarded razor restoration expert.

We are offering this razor for sale as a sealed bid auction to make sure everyone interested has a chance at it, not just whoever sees it first. For ten days (until the end of Sunday, March 4, 2018), we will accept bids by email to red-dot@shavehq.com. The minimum bid is $100. We will not reveal any of these bids during the course of the auction. Once the bidding timeframe has closed, we will send a PayPal invoice to the highest bidder.* The winning bid will include USPS Priority domestic shipping and PayPal fees.** Once the transaction is complete, we will announce the final sale price.

We chose a sealed bid format to encourage you to decide on your one best price you would pay for this piece. If it sells for more, you will not feel bad about not offering more. This format also renders sniping moot. I encourage you to look at what comparable razors have sold for recently. One source for this information is the Red Dot Fatboy page at the Gillette Adjustable Razors Reference Resource and Historical Archive under the "recent sales" heading. You may also check completed sales on eBay, but be aware that at least 90% of eBay auctions advertised as a Red Dot Fatboy are in fact selling a standard Fatboy. Look carefully at the photos to see whether what sold was genuine.

If you have any questions about this special razor, please do let us know and we will do our best to answer them.

One last note: we listed a price of $5000.00 because our ecommerce platform requires a price. We do not expect that the sale price will be anywhere near that number. However, if someone does buy the razor through this site at that price, we will donate $2,000 to the buyer's favorite charity and $2,000 to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. We trust that bidders will understand if the auction is cancelled under those circumstances.

Bids received after Sunday, March 4, 2018, 11:59:59 pm Central Time, will not be counted.

*We consider your bid to be your honest intent to pay that price for the razor. Should the high bidder fail to pay, we will contact the next highest bidder.

**If you live outside the United States, we will ask you to pay actual shipping costs.
